MURFREESBORO – Property Assessor Rob Mitchell left the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party today to give the GOP control over all eight full-time elected Rutherford County offices.
“This decision hasn’t been easy for me,” Mitchell told a group of Republicans gathered at their county headquarters on East Main Street to celebrate the property assessor joining the GOP. “I believe that when you made a commitment, you stick to it. Loyalty is important to me. I have not changed. I will always make certain every person receives a fair deal from the assessor’s office.”
Mitchell won his seat in 2012 as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Bill Boner and faces a re-election year in 2016.
“I will always make certain the employees are treated with respect, compassion and professionalism, but I must belong to a political party that reflects the beliefs I hold dear: my belief in God, my family and my community,” said Mitchell, who participated in an event that touted how he used to be a Young Republican and precinct captain who governs conservatively. “I feel good to be home again.”
Mitchell’s decision to join the Republicans means County Commissioner Chantho Sourinho is the only Democrat left holding office in the county. Sourinho won a second four-year term in 2014 by three votes against Republican Patsy Briley.
